"Release The Kraken!"
That has got to be my all-time favorite movie line. It just sounds really cool and really perverse at the same time.
Okay, so forgive me that this is a late film review but I felt compelled to add my two cents worth. I decided to wait until all the excitement of it wore down in order to give an honest assessment. Who hasn't seen the awesome trailer of Perseus on his adventure to save Andromeda from the Kraken? Along the way he battles the Stygian witches, giant sized scorpions and Medusa, the gorgon wench with a decent sized bust - and yet, surprisingly these men still made eye-contact with her? What's up with that!
The trailer was far more exciting than the movie, which was a major disappointment for me. There was good opportunity to re-make a classic and now that opportunity is gone for the next 30 years. I enjoyed the special effects and the adventure but I was disappointed with the altered story-line - I felt bereft because it was missing the major element which drove Perseus towards his destiny in the first movie - love.
Yes, I'm a sucker for it! In the original, Perseus wasn't boo-hooing over being a demigod, his goal was to save Andromeda. Why refuse to have anything to do with the gods? It's pointless, it's not like they were going to go anywhere anytime soon - they're immortal! It's a conflict that I couldn't relate to - however I could relate to love and risking your life for someone who's worth a neck tickle! Remember in the original when Perseus had to race against time to save Andromeda because she was going to be Kraken feed? - it was exciting because it was motivated by LOVE! In this version I was left wondering why he's even bothering? I could not understand at all what motivated him and I felt lost and sad because this movie had so much potential. The rift between Zeus and Hades seemed forced - as if it were added at the last minute to give more dimension to the story line. It didn't!
I love Sam Worthington and I look forward to seeing more work from him in the future but what's the point of putting him in a movie with a sword, a skirt and giving him a shield if he's not going to go all out for the right girl - you know, the one who's about to be eaten by a giant sea monster? Talk about taking liberties with Greek mythology - they had him falling for Io! That is just so WRONG! Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson, and the rest were just "okay", I guess they didn't feel the love from the original either and as a result their performances fall a bit flat.
Since this movie has been out for a few weeks, it wouldn't be very bright of me to give a recommendation. So far, it's grossed over $200,000,000 both domestically and internationally. However if you haven't seen it yet and are still wondering if it's worth it, I say go for it if you simply want to see some adventure that includes huge scorpions, a gorgon wench with a nice rack, and a Kraken.
