If you are as anxious as I am for more "Dexter" and in need of some juicy tid-bits to keep you satiated until the new season kicks off in September then wait no longer. While I can't give you information on the complete story line, I can give you some scoopage on a few interesting twists and turns. Now mind you, the information I have isn't earth-shattering, so don't blame me if it still leaves you feeling empty.
Here's a very broad recap of the Season 4:
Dexter is a married man and father to two step-children and his 6 month old son, Harrison. He's finding it tough to balance being a family man by day and a serial killer by night.
The hunt was on for the Trinity killer (John Lithgow), a serial killer who resurfaces every several years and repeats a specific pattern - killing in threes.
Frank Lundy and Debra were gunned down by an unknown assailant - Debra was hospitalized Lundy was killed.
Through Lundy's notes, Dexter is able to piece together when the killer will strike next. He not only learns the identity of the killer (Arthur Miller) but also finds out that he's a family man. He holds off on killing him after seeing that Arthur is much like himself. He wants to learn how Arthur maintains the facade of being a loving father and husband and balancing his desire to kill. He becomes close to Arthur using a false name, Kyle Butler.
Debra is barred from working on the Trinity case because of her personal involvement with Lundy. She continues her investigation of the mystery C.I. her father had an affair with years ago.
Detective Quinn becomes involved with Christine Hill, a news reporter who has a personal interest in the Trinity case.
Dexter discovers that here are cracks in Arthur Miller's facade and that he has been terrorizing his family in private.
Arthur visits Christine Hill, where it is revealed that she is his daughter. She killed Frank Lundy to protect her father. Frank was close to finding out Arthur's identity.
Debra discovers that the C.I. her father has been having an affair with is Laura Mosur, Dexter's biological mother and that his brother Brian was the Icetruck Killer, whom Debra was engaged to a few years ago.
Arthur Miller kidnaps a 10 year old boy to complete the cycle of his murder spree.
Debra discovers that Christine was the gunman who killed Lundy and also that Christine is Arthur Miller's daughter. She commits suicide after Arthur rejects her.
Dexter finds the boy and returns him safely to his family, but Arthur escapes.
Arthur learns Dexter's true identity and tracks him down at the Miami Police Department.
Worried for the safety of his family, Dexter convinces Rita to leave early on a honeymoon they planned to take together and he'd join her later. The other kids are packed up and on a trip to Disneyland with the neighbors and out of harms way.
Arthur clears out his bank account, intending to leave town. Dexter finds him and kills him.
Thinking that alls well that ends well, when Dexter returns home to pack and join Rita, he soon finds out that she had to take a later flight. He hears the baby crying in the bathroom. He walks in and sees that the Trinity killer got to Rita, leaving his son Harrison to fend for himself in a pool of her blood.
Rita's death was a complete shocker to me, I did not see that one coming - but as cliff hangers go, this is a lead-in to Season 5 and this is where it becomes interesting. Usually when a spouse is murdered, the first suspect is always the husband. We all know that the Trinity killer killed Rita including Dexter but for some bizarre reason the Police department doesn't know this - despite Rita being killed in the same fashion as the Trinity's previous victims - this makes me go hmm?
So this is where we have to wait for Season 5 to have it clarified.
Now the other interesting tid-bit is that we expect that perhaps Dexter would hand over the children to his in-laws. I was thinking that they would bring back Rita's abominable mother (Jo-Beth Williams) but it appears that Dexter will turn to none other than Debra to help him continue to raise the kids and not only that, they will all squeeze back into Dexter's teeny tiny first apartment. Debra does not have a maternal bone in her body which will make this both funny and quite "not so funny".
So there you have it folks, in more ways than one, Dexter's nightmare has only just begun. I'm anxious to see how he handles it when suspicion falls on him in Rita's death. Remember also that Detective Quinn was following Dexter a few times because he suspected Dexter of having an affair. I'm sure this will tie in to the new plot line as well.
Ahhh...only four months to go....and many thanks to EW.com for the inside scoop.
