Welcome to "Cinema Herald". My aim is to bring movie reviews to a somewhat different level. I don't know about you guys but I'm sick and tired of Critics who dissect a movie to bits. Who cares about all that deep stuff, sometimes you just want to know if you'll be entertained or not. Is it worth me spending $10? Now don't get me wrong, sometimes when we watch a movie, it does require us to put on our thinking caps and I'll do that from time to time depending on the film I review but for the most part, I just want to know if I'm going to have a laugh or a cry or even crap my pants - in other words, will it take my mind off the fact that I'm broke and my rent is due for a few hours? Movies are a public service...they are to help us escape for a few hours and forget that we're overworked and under paid.

Gerard Butler stars in Machine Gun Preacher

It was reported on Deadline.com back in January "about the effort to mount Machine Gun Preacher, a fact-based drama directed by Marc Forster. Gerard Butler was keen to play reformed bad guy Sam Childers, a drug-dealing biker who found God and became the scourge of rebel forces who kidnap children in the Sudan and Northern Uganda and force them to become sex slaves or child soldiers. Well, the film's is now a reality, as Lionsgate has committed to be domestic distributor, and Mandate International handling foreign sales. Shooting starts this summer".

After playing the field with a handful of characters in those typical Hollywood movies, Gerard Butler will most likely come out swinging with substance with not only "Machine Gun Preacher" but his other future projects. Also in the works for the Scottish actor is, "Burns", the true story of Scotish Bard Robert Burns, and "Coriolanus", a story of a banished Roman who allies himself with a sworn enemy for revenge.

I've noticed Gerard Butler and admired his work for years
before he donned his warrior gear and started wielding a thumping great big sword at Thermopylae disemboweling Persians. While I have "300" sitting comfortably on the DVD shelf, my other favorite flick of his that's sitting right besides it is the complete antithesis. He plays the Stranger in one of the best "chick flicks" of all time, "Dear Frankie" in this touching movie he's a lonely wanderer who is hired to be a father to a young boy for a day and the experience has a profound effect on him. I think both of these films are proof positive of the acting range he is capable of and let's not forget that he wasn't too shabby in "The Phantom Of The Opera" either. So, people shouldn't judge him so quickly.

It's unfortunate that Hollywood has a short term memory. It seems that since "300", the movie which put Gerard Butler's name on the map, he has been working to avoid being pigeon-holed into into the stereotypical muscle bound mo-fo who kicks ass and take names later. He's been dabbling with different characters. He played a father in "Nim's Island", the romantic leads in "P.S. I Love You", "The Ugly Truth" and "The Bounty Hunter", a bumbling thief in "Rock-n-Rolla", a vigilante baddie in "Law Abiding Citizen" and then back to action in "Gamer". Because he has a name now his failures far outweigh the success he's had in the past.

The notoriety from playing Leonidas has put his status on the radar which can be either a blessing or curse. His pre-fame existence has allowed him to be more of a chameleon by adapting to each role while remaining under the radar leaving the heavy criticism to the star power he was supporting, like "Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life", "Timeline", and "Reign of Fire".

I've noticed on various forums and articles that Gerard has been getting a lot of flack for his recent choices in film roles, and it is fair enough to say that they haven't been that great but despite what people say he is good and there is much to be admired about an actor who would rather be known for the variety of work that he's capable of pulling off rather than being known for one type of character. Let's face it, Sylvester Stallone will not be remembered for his comedic turns in "Stop, Or My Mom Will Shoot" or "Oscar".

I think "Machine Gun Preacher" will be another start for Butler - the best is yet to come!
