Welcome to "Cinema Herald". My aim is to bring movie reviews to a somewhat different level. I don't know about you guys but I'm sick and tired of Critics who dissect a movie to bits. Who cares about all that deep stuff, sometimes you just want to know if you'll be entertained or not. Is it worth me spending $10? Now don't get me wrong, sometimes when we watch a movie, it does require us to put on our thinking caps and I'll do that from time to time depending on the film I review but for the most part, I just want to know if I'm going to have a laugh or a cry or even crap my pants - in other words, will it take my mind off the fact that I'm broke and my rent is due for a few hours? Movies are a public service...they are to help us escape for a few hours and forget that we're overworked and under paid.

Movie News: The Mighty Thor - First Official Photo Released!

May 2nd 2010 09:23
Category: What's Up?, Action
U.S. Release: May 20, 2011
Directed by: Kenneth Branagh
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano

"Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior, is sent down to Earth as punishment for reigniting a reckless war. But after a dangerous villain from his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth, the hammer-wielding Thor will learn what it takes to be a true hero in order to save mankind." - Official Press Release from Marvel.com

I love movies based on Comic book super heroes and I've been waiting patiently for the first glimpses of Australian actor, Chris Hemsworth as "Thor". The Verdict: He looks amazing!

Yahoo posted the first still of "The Mighty Thor".

Now, of course they were being sneaky by releasing a photo which teases and leaves you curious and wanting for more but for now I'm quite satisfied.

I guess the real question is: Will Thor, the movie, deliver?

According to Chris Hemsworth, comic book fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The story-line will stay true to the comics. He told Access Hollywood:

“I have the hammer... I have a long blond wig and a nice big red cape and all sorts of armor and interesting bits and pieces. There’s so many different versions of the comic books, they’ve sort of bonded quite a few of them to form this particular story, but it’s all very true to the original stuff”.

Ashley Miller, a co-writer on the project has this to say:

"Thor's powers are godly, yes...But at the end of the day, he's a man... Odin sends him to Earth because he's not perfect. He's brash, arrogant. Even over-confident...he also bleeds. He struggles. Life kicks him where it hurts the most... You want to feel Thor's rage when he rages. You want to see him fight like hell, and take as much as he dishes out -- maybe more. You want to have a visceral reaction to the guy, and what happens to him. You don't want his adventures to be clean and antiseptic. You want to see the dirt, and grime and blood. You want to feel every bone crunching moment of every fight. And when he unleashes the storm, you want to feel like you're seeing the power of a GOD at work."

Kenneth Brannagh is no shabby director, sure he was an odd choice in my opinion but I'm sure he would not have been selected if the studios doubted that he could deliver the goods. Let's not forget that he's got a few Critically acclaimed movies under his belt as well. I find him quite intelligent and witty and I can't wait to see what he does with something that's completely different from what he's best known for, which are adaptations of Shakespeare's "Hamlet", "Much Ado About Nothing", and "Henry V",

It's interesting to note that Shakespeare was not his passion growing up in Belfast, Ireland. In a recent article in the LA Times (April 1, 2010), Mr. Branagh admits that his single comic book passion was, in fact, "Thor". He says:

"From my time in Belfast as a kid, that's the first time I came across that comic, really, exclusively, I don't know why, but it struck a chord. I was drawn to it. I liked all the dynastic drama."

For now it all sounds really good. I think today's audiences are very particular about their super-heroes, especially since recent movies have featured our favorite human avengers with a more darker side which we all can relate too. This is particularly apparent in "Watchmen" and the "The Dark Knight" along with the recent news that Superman, Spiderman, and The Fantastic Four will all be revamped to show more edgier facets to these characters.

I'm already there!
