Remakes - why?
September 25th 2008 08:58
A recent discussion on the remake of Halloween got me thinking. Why do filmmakers feel the need to remake perfectly good movies. These movies are almost always inferior to the originals and rarely bring anything new to them.
Do they think that if they take something thats already well liked, and they make it even better, they are king of the mountain? Or are they lazy? Take something thats already done, make a few changes and now they have a (bad) film to stick on their resume. Or perhaps do they just lack vision and creativity? There are thousands, if not millions of screenplays out there waiting to be made into movies. So do they just not have the creativity to take one of these screenplays and transform it into a movie? Or a fourth possiblity is that they don't really care if it's good or bad, but are just hoping to get their name out there anyway they can.
Take the shining for example. Did Mick Garris really think that throwing in a bunch of special effects could ever compete with Jack Nicholson's descent into madness and his infamous "Here's Johnny"?
If you've never seen the original shining, here are two clips from the movie.
Gonna bash your brains in.
Here's Johnny
And what about Willy Wonka? A lot of people claim to like it better than the original. But is it because they really think it's a better movie or is it because they like looking at Johnny Depp?
I love the original Willy Wonka of course (well, all except for the burping scene). As nice as Johnny Depp is to look at he just can't compare to Gene Wilder. And no one can replace the Oompa Loompas.
Here's the movie trailer which I had never seen before until now....or at least I don't remember seeing it. Guess I'm getting too old to remember things from so long ago.
I was very unhappy when I heard that Logan's Run (1976) was being remade, then happy to hear the project had been abandoned. Now I hear it's set to come out in 2010, so I'm sad again. As much as I like roller coasters they need to stop playing with my emotions like that. Michael York will always be the real Logan to me regardless of who plays him in the remake.

So come on guys, there are millions of new stories out there just waiting to be told. Get off your lazy rear ends, stop riding on the coattails of someone else's success and do something original.
